More Sickness

Gannon’s got scarlet fever.

But don’t panic! It’s certainly not the terror it used to be. Scarlet fever (also known as scarlatina/scarletina) has a reputation for being the disease that Helen Keller had at 19 months old that caused her to become blind and deaf. In Little Women, Beth gets scarlet fever and never quite recovers. If you’re a fan of the Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder, you’ll remember that her older sister Mary lost her sight after she and the rest of the family got scarlet fever. And, of course, L.M. Montgomery’s character Gilbert Blythe recovers slowly but fully from scarlet fever in the Anne of GreenAmoxicillin Gables series. It’s now believed that rather than scarlet fever causing all the major problems, it was often rheumatic fever, a condition that can come after untreated strep infections.

But now we have antibiotics, and strep throat and scarlet fever are easily diagnosed with a quick little swab so it seldom progresses to the more dangerous rheumatic fever.

So now Gannon is on a ten-day regimen of good ole amoxicillin, three times a day.

Hi Eva! Oh, I’m sorry to hear about your little guy. I’m glad they have good drugs for that, though. I had heard that Scarlet Fever was making something of a comeback in NH. My Dad had RF when he was a child and it can definitely be dangerous (he was lucky), so I’m grateful for all the treatments.

P.S. I enjoyed the pictures of your kids, they are getting so big and they are beautiful!

Hmm../ must have something to do with closer proximity to Nathaniel Hawthorne’s digs. OK, bad nerdy joke. Hope everybody is starting to feel better.

My blog. Herein read entries related to who and what is important to me. Feel free to leave comments. I feel free to delete them if I don't like them. So there. By reading about my life, readers should expect to begin to see their own lives as increasingly more organized and sophisticated, their homes cleaner and neater.

Why This Blog?

Well, mostly this is for my family to see pictures and read anecdotes about the kids. It's also a venue for telling the story of my struggles and victories in my life as a Christian, a wife, a mother, and a teacher. Occasionally I toss in some weird or touching item that I've found.

What’s Christianity All About?

The Gospel is the news that Jesus Christ, the Righteous One, died for our sins and rose again, eternally triumphant over all his enemies, so that there is now no condemnation for those who believe, but only everlasting joy. [as said by John Piper]
